20th March – International Day of Happiness
The History of the International Day of Happiness
The roots of the International Day of Happiness date back to the General Assembly of the United Nations that passed a resolution in 2012: declaring happiness a “fundamental human goal” and encouraging the pursuit of happiness as a human objective. The resolution was inspired by the country of Bhutan, the kingdom that deserves its fame for expanding Gross National Happiness over Gross Domestic Product.
In 2013, the first International Day of Happiness was declared globally after the culmination of the adoption of a UNGA resolution. Overall, it has been observed on March 20th each year, ever since.
On every International Day of Happiness, a different theme is celebrated that mirrors any existing challenges or issues the world faces today. From “Happiness for All, Together” to “Happiness at Work” as themes, they all have an aim to imply linking happiness to work and inspiring people to take actions for building a happier life for everyone.
The Significance of International Day of Happiness
The essential meaning of International day of Happiness is the awareness about the significance of mental health and expanding the concept of happiness. Amid constant efforts at addressing issues such as poverty, inequality, and unsustainable environmental practices, attainment of happiness is placed far down in the priority list. Through the means of dedicating a single day to celebrate happiness, the international community practically proclaims its support to core values of universality, equity and a future based on sustainability.
Social media platforms have a great contribution in disseminating celebrations of happiness across the world, with a lot of hashtags like #InternationalDayOfHappiness trending globally. People do not just share inspirational stories and encouraging quotes, but also messages of hope and faith that can be felt across borders and cultures virtually.
