D-Day 80: Sky Overflows with Historic Aircraft - A Photo Recap

To note the 80th anniversary of D-Day, a flypast of legendary aircraft like Spitfires was done as they were very vital in winning the war for the Allies in WWII. They flew above the Isle of Wight and the Solent sea channel which separates it from the mainland while veterans met at various events across France.

On June 6, 1944, D-Day set a record as it was the biggest seaborne invasion that had ever happened in world history when Allied troops began their liberation mission by landing at Normandy, France. This operation saw more than 3 million soldiers, 5,000 vessels, and 11,000 planes participating.

Last weekend, some planes that had participated in WW2 passed overhead. This was meant to show how brave the soldiers from varied regions were during the D-Day fight, they were reminding us of the role that freedom played in our lives.

An important role was played by the Isle of Wight in the D-Day landings as it was used by the Allied forces as a place to stage troops and materials there. Before the D-Day, more than 250,000 troops passed through there.

D-Day is a day which we should always remember. It reminds us of how important freedom is and how much people did to keep it. So when we saw all those old aeroplanes passing over the Isle of Wight it was like they were saying – “Thank you” to all heroes who fought there in this tragedy.
